Yamaha has been in the industry for a long time, and as a multi-avatar AV manufacturer, they cater to the consumer not only with AV receivers, loudspeakers and amplifiers but also in the form of sources, so, for our “Source Special”, we reviewed the BD-S473, a 3D Blu-ray player from Yamaha.
OUT OF THE BOX
The BD-S473 is an all-black Blu-ray player. The finish of the product is just about decent, the front panel comprises of a display and few buttons that exude a simple uncluttered look. There is not much one can say about the looks of the player as it is a plain looking unit.
This is the most important part when it comes to buying a Blu-ray player. The BD-S473 is a 3D Blu-ray player from Yamaha which is capable of playing a host of discs like DVDs, CDs and so on. But we would like to know why the company has reduced the functionality of the player by providing only an HDMI out. This is a serious handicap of this player; it restricts its versatility completely as you are placed at the mercy of only an HDMI out. The next thing is the tray loading mechanism. As an improvement to these devices, we would like to see them without any tray mechanism at all as it brings a lot of noise with it. The best way would be to simply slide in a disc and to avoid all drop down flaps and tray opening mechanisms. Well, the Blu-ray player offers options like BonusView and BD-Live. The difference between the two is that BonusView allows you to watch a particular scene in a different angle, which may or may not be accompanied with commentary from the director of the film, where as BD-Live is a feature where you can download and stream content specific to a particular movie that is being played back.
